                                                    "A magical place"

My Family and I during a recent visit
I have been attending Mingus Mountain Camp for retreats and summer camps for over 20 years. I still remember my experience of awe during my first retreat there, in the Fall of 1988, when a cloud covered the mountain and fog filled the camp meadow. I can remember the warmth of hot chocolate in my hands, and the intimacy our youth group experienced talking around the dining hall fireplace that evening.

Over the years since I've experienced clear sunny days, winter snows, fall breezes, summer thunderstorms, and even a June snow flurry! I've known a variety of staff who have worked at Mingus, and they have always extended tremendous hospitality: from loaning snow boots to a desert boy experiencing snow for the first time to accommodating a first-time dad bringing a baby on retreat. Most recently, I have experienced the new wonder of fishing, hiking, and star-gazing with my own small children.

Mingus Mountain, and Mingus Mountain Camp, have always been a magical place for me. Come experience it for yourself!

                                                    -Ron Bartlow, February, 2011

Mingus Mountain Camp feeds body and soul.

“We spent a week at Mingus Mountain Camp.  The trees, the hikes, the views, the clouds, the clear air, the stars, the deer, the birds, the lake, the happy faces of campers and counselors-- everywhere you looked, you saw God.  What a site to experience spiritual awakening and growth!”

“From Chris’ world-famous oatmeal to the biscuits and gravy, Mingus Mountain Camp finds a way to feed the body and soul.”

“The Manager and staff at Mingus Mountain Camp can be counted on to provide a quality experience.  The food is outstanding and gets a big thumbs-up from adults, teens and children.  Over the years I have gone to Brandon Hill, the manager, for help in overcoming a challenge or implementing a program idea.  He is always ready to assist with good humor and a store of knowledge.   His dedication and experience behind the scenes enable us to focus on our program with confidence.”

Discover the fun of exploring nature!

“For people like me who love nature, Mingus is a very special place to be.  At camp, you’re surrounded by forests and have access to the most majestic, sweeping views all the way across the Verde Valley to the San Francisco Peaks.   It is a place that makes ‘mountaintop experiences’ happen for many people.”

“It’s great to get today’s kids and families away from technology and into the woods.  At Mingus, kids discover the fun of exploring in nature-- whether they’re crawdadding at the lake or hiking on forest trails or really seeing the Milky Way for the first time.”

“Some of the adults who’ve been part of our family camps there have enjoyed taking advantage of the camp’s proximity to Jerome and Sedona for day trips.  It’s fun to head out from camp and drive over to quirky, art-filled Jerome or down through the red rocks of Sedona.  And, after an adventure, it’s good to get back ‘home’ to camp, where the fun continues.”

“OK, yes, cell phones do work at Mingus.  So, you can have access to home or work if you really need it.  But the good news is, you rarely see cell phones out-- and children and youth campers never have them at camp-- because there’s just too much to do to spend time on the phone.”

“Why do I think Mingus is so special?   Location, location, location.  Where else in Arizona can you be on the top of a mountain with no development nearby and have these kinds of views?  There are other ‘piney woods camps’ in Arizona, but I haven’t ever seen another camp that has such a spectacular location.”
